A Week In Review

Something I’ve realized about freelance and my current work schedule is there’s a definite pattern. Every other week is wildly busy, and it’s been that way since I started out on my own back in June. One week, things are slow and I’m able to tend to my personal interests more. The next, I am drowning in work and meetings and there’s a weird smell coming from the kitchen that I can’t seem to locate. It’s not the most fun pattern, but at least I’m aware of it so I can prepare.

All that to say, this week was the mysterious smell week and had my head so buried in work, I wasn’t able to share all the little one-off pieces of content I wanted to with you guys. So tonight, I’m going to do a “dump” as the kids are saying these days so we’re all up to date with one another!

SO HERE WE GO!

Mascara

I don’t like the bambi eye stuff my mom suggested. When she reads this, she’ll be hearing this news for the first time so please pray for the texts and/or phone call I get about it. It smudges easily and breaks off, and I’m not into it. I always seem to have those very faint mascara smudges right beneath my lower lashes when I wear it, and I don’t wear mascara on my lower lashes as it is. So, I’m going back to L’Oreal’s Lash Paradise and staying there because it really is the best (just double check that you DON’T get waterproof because that shit does not come off).

DOORBELL

I got and installed a video doorbell ALL ON MY OWN, GUYS. No, it’s not ring. That shit’s too expensive for me. I got a knock-off for about $80 that had great reviews instead. I will say, it took me a little too long to figure it out but that’s because I left the goddamn plastic film on the batteries so, even though it was charged and ready to go, I would unplug it and it would turn off and I couldn’t figure it out. I’m new to this Ms. Fix-It life, so be gentle with me. Anyway, it’s great, it works, and it’s so fun to spy on who’s outside. There hasn’t been much action yet besides my tests, but SOON!

FOOT REST

Along with my standing desk (that I am absolutely loving by the way and can’t recommend investing enough), I realized what was missing for the times I sit down is a little foot rest. So I ordered this little guy, and he’s perfect. Super comfortable, perfect height. But I will say, I’ve basically been standing since I got this desk. I knew I wanted to stand, but I didn’t know I wanted to stand this much. I’ve barely sat down, but when I have, the foot rest has been a tiny little godsend for my feetsies.

MONITOR RISER

Oh but the upgrading of my home office is far from finished. I keep thinking of little things to add to the setup, including a legitimate riser for my bigger monitor to rest on. I’ve been using a pile of books since March, but the legitimacy of my standing desk made me realize I needed to match that commitment with an actual riser. So, I got this one with built-in cubby holes and LOVE IT. You have to put it together yourself and the instructions are in Japanese, but the pictures and actual pieces themselves are pretty self-explanatory. It completely upgraded my look, and it even has a built-in phone holder!

MARSHMALLOW BROWNIES

After watching the shit show that was this season’s GBBS bakers royally fuck up brownies last Friday (seriously, I’m still not over it. A BROWNIE IS A BROWNIE. Not a half cheesecake/half brownie. Not a brownie with figs and pomegranate seeds on the bottom. A FUCKING BROWNIE), I had the strange urge to bake some myself. I suppose I was so upset, I needed to remind myself what a legitimate brownie looks and tastes like. So I went with these Ooey Gooey Marshmallow Brownies, and THEY WERE SO GOOD. So good, in fact, I had way too many and was ill through the next morning. Not vomit/diarrhea ill, but nauseous as fuck and just generally gross feeling. Anyway, they’re amazing—just don’t eat a lot at once. Also, this is still my favorite brownie recipe of all time.

WINDOW BLINDS

When I first moved into my place last year, I got these blinds from Bed Bath and Beyond and had my dad put them on all the windows. Except for the front windows. I’m not sure why I left those naked, but I really never thought about it too much until EMMASTHING LLC/WFH became my new life. Since I position my desk in front of the front windows, the afternoon sun is literally blinding from 1-4. So I finally ordered blinds for them and had my bf help me install them this weekend. They’re really simple and really great and, if you’re not interested in custom blinds or can’t afford something that grandiose, these are the solution!

THE BEST TURKEY CHILI

Ambitious Kitchen calls this the best healthy turkey chili ever and, guess what? IT IS. It sounds so simple that you wonder “how can this be flavorful?” But lemme tell you—it’s incredible.

NEW RED LIPSTICK

Red is my favorite color both in general and with lipstick. Charlotte Tilbury is my favorite makeup brand. Put these two together, and you get the new lipstick I just picked up: So Red. It’s a very true red—not super orange, not super blue. Just straight red. And it’s part of her K.I.S.S.I.N.G. lipstick collection, which goes on super smooth and shiny. There’s no matte to it. I love it!

That’s all I can remember for now, guys. Thank you for coming to this dump, and if you’re reading this on the actual day I posted it (October 25), my 10% off code for Necessaire ends at midnight tonight, so treat yourself to lush bath and body product: EMMAG10. This is the first time they’ve ever given me a code and I think they’re testing the waters to see if I can deliver, so help a sister out but also yourself out with lotion, bodywash, whathaveyou! It’s the best stuff.

Okay. Talk soon. Wow this was like a blog from 2010 and I’m into it.

Bye.

xox,
