An Eclectic Cozy Living Room For The Ages

I don’t know if you know this, but putting a home together TAKES A LONG ASS TIME. I moved in with Zac last April, and we have moved shit around more times than I can count, have purged so much, bought so much, returned so much… you get the picture. It’s a never-ending process and adventure, for better or for worse. That’s why FINALLY figuring out our mother fucking living room was such a win for us over the weekend.

Our home is very unique. It was built in the 1920s, so it has a lot of quirks. Plus, it was originally laid out as a duplex, so we basically have two living rooms. That said, our main living room is the first thing you see and interact with as soon as you walk in the door, and it’s been in a state of limbo since forever. We’ve been meaning/needing to update the rug for a long time, we didn’t really have the seating situation figured out, and so on and so forth. Here’s what she’s looked like for the last long while.

She wasn’t bad, but she needed a tune-up big time. She needed a purpose. A style. A vIbEy mOoD, if you will. The rug was too small for the space, the bench behind the couch made no sense (obviously, as we were setting attic-bound decor on it in the interim), the couch needed to be vacuumed (if Bowie had opposable thumbs, that would be his daily chore). It just… WAS LACKING. We’ve gone back and forth about getting a new rug for months, so I was highly surprised when Zac casually announced to me the other week that he had just gone ahead and ordered us a rug from the best and only place to get rugs for insane prices, Rug Source. Legit, he did not show it to me. He didn’t ask for my approval. Didn’t run it by me. Just went ahead and pulled the trigger, and honestly? It was tight.

The rug arrived over the weekend (literally the only silver lining of the weekend since our trip to Lawrence, Kansas was ruined by dumb sleet and snow), so on Sunday we made some moves. After laying the new rug down, we made the decision to move my couch back into the main living room. You see, Zac and I just so happened to have the exact same couch from Crate and Barrel just in different colors and fabrics. So yes, while putting them in the same room is a bit eclectic and mismatched, it also makes enough sense to at least try it and that’s exactly what we did.

I meaaaaaaaaaaan. It’s incredible what a rug can do, no? The Dude knew what he was talking about. We’re incredibly happy with this new setup. The color! The brightness! The matching but not matching sofas! It feels insanely cozy and exceptionally welcoming when you open our front door and walk in, which is definitely what we were going for.

Now, at this point, I’m sure some of you wondering “but what about the other living room/media room/blue room where your couch was?!” Great question. Zac and I made a very expensive and very adult decision to invest in the right kind of couch that belongs in that room and space. The sofa wasn’t big enough and we really wanted to maximize the space we have in there, so we ordered an L-shaped sectional from Room and Board. Did it cost an arm and a leg and maybe also a boob? Yes. But we discussed it at length and decided we wanted the quality and, to us, it was worth it. It’s the Metro L-shaped 3 part sectional in the 125”x125” size in the Tatum grey IF anyone is curious. And it won’t be here until May, sooooo… we’ll be in our front living room if you need us! Here’s a visual to tide you over until it arrives:
